Who is a man? There are so many billions of different living creatures in this world. Some under water some over land and some on both. These are basically classified as plants and animals. Man is an animal. But what is the difference between man and other animals. Animals can also see. On many occasions they have better hearing power than humans.
They are also capable of making sounds to communicate. We can't say that they can't think - they are capable of that too. They also live, reproduce and die just like humans. Then what's the difference.
Man is a cultural animal. Just think - When they were roaming like animals, what could be the difference between them and other animals. They were just doing the same things that animals are still doing now. Animals don't have any rules. They can do what ever they want to if possible by them. If they want to eat, they eat, if they want to sleep they sleep and if they want to mate, they mate.
CULTURE - is the main difference. Man developed a culture which actually differentiated him from other animals. He started laying rules for life and started following them together with his community. When he was an animal, if he wants to mate a woman he would have used his might to get her. Even if a tussle arises between two men on any item be it food, abode, woman or anything else only the might would have been right. Who ever wins gains the right to own it. Just like all other animals he just wandered here and there and did whatever was possible to him.
Slowly when human communities started growing, he should have started framing rules. These communities might have come into existence for sharing resources like river banks etc. When man was an individual animal, he wouldn't have abided by any rules but when he became a part of a community he had to abide by the rules. That should have been when 'Might is right' policy first lost its supremacy in the world. This rulebook should have started growing and which in course of time gave way to the birth of culture.
The culture may not be something which is written and handed over to generations. It should have been something which grew or evolved during a longer time-frame. Also it varies from place to place based on many criteria like present situations, geographic locations etc. Some grew faster and some slower. But one of the most important points to note is that he started dressing in such a manner that his sexual parts are covered - be it for man or for woman. Just imagine - why didn't he create a dress which covered only his belly or thighs? May be he should have wanted to control himself under that department. There could be other reasons too - but I sincerely feel that this should have been the reason as various cultures round the world did almost the same kind of covering using different means. Though he had developed his dressing sense later, his minimum clothing till now stands the same.
I strongly feel that one of the major aspects in a culture is the development of relationships. He created several relations around him - father, mother, sister, brother, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece etc. He differentiated between his relations like mother, sister and daughter with other women. He created an agreement called marriage before entering into a relationship with a woman. Though this agreement differed by name, practices, rituals etc almost all cultures in the world had this agreement. Only after this engagement a man who roamed like an animal was allowed to mate a woman.
Though man got changed from an uncultured animal to a man, he still has his animal instincts at his deep. These instincts do vary between individuals and sometimes even between communities. There could be many instances in the life of a man when his animal instincts pop up. How well he controls, suppresses or manages it does matter. Whenever a man loses control over himself - his temper, his sensual arousals etc he becomes an animal. Not that its possible for everyone to hold themselves throughout their life but it is definitely not impossible. Everyone should aim to reach such a stage. They should always have control over themselves. EVen during situations when they lose their temper how well they re-cuperate back to control themselves is very important.
Cruelity, barbarism and other associated inhuman activities cannot be a part of any culture. Whenever a man relishes such acts, it means he is going back to his roots. May be that could be a reason why bullfights still find a place in such a advanced world. Poor creatures are running on the ground in fright and man with his animal instincts is still fighting with it - something which he did a few thousand years ago too. The policy 'Might is right' has to be killed. The world became a man's world because he was mightier than the woman. Now that the state of women has changed in this world because this policy has got reduced - though not fully. They are able to stand on par with men. But it doesn't mean that if he mates with five women she can also do the same. If that happens we are back as animals. Both of them have to abide by some rules. They have to restrict themselves as only humans and live with only one mate.
These are some important aspects of a good culture. A good culture is something which prefers peace but still values bravery and valour. Power should be used only to win and not to kill. Men and women should be equal. Infidelity and cross-mating should vanish. Barbarism and inhumanity should be read/heard (if required) only as history and not as current affairs. He should completely stop his atrocities towards nature and start living along with it. Might is right should then be wrong.
Let us live and die as humans.

Animal instincts
Actually some 2-3 years ago, I had a very long discussion with some of my friends (after the release of the film Virumandi) on whether capital punishment should be abolished or not. One of my friend was dead-against this punishment while I supported it. He was saying that under any circumstances, one man does not have the authority to kill another man. He suggested that it could be replaced with the solitary refinement punishment.
On the other hand I said that, nowadays most of the murders are being judged very humanely by considering the situation & the reason for the murder. But there are some people who are unfortunately not animals but are also not fit to be called humans. I told him that such people with animal instincts are not needed in our society and should be executed. For long I had been thinking with similar grounds and after seeing a few films being released this year I felt like writing this.
People with Animal instincts. This is a very crucial topic in our current society. By the term 'Animal Instincts', I tend to mean cruel & brutal behavioural traits towards fellow living beings or at least human beings. Based on this context, I would rather classify people (men & women) into three categories. People(1) without any tints of animal instincts at all (2) with varied levels of such instincts.(3) Dangerously filled with animal instincts (mostly born so)
1) People in this first category, may be soft or hard natured but would be thoroughly without any such instincts. After much debate within myself, I sincerely feel that we definitely do have so many people around us still to be in this category. I also firmly believe that this category would be dominated more by the women all over the world (may be that the percentage could vary according to the culture of the residing country - this holds good for all the three categories).
3)!!! People in the third category belong to the perfect stage of ex-termination - I firmly believe so. Most of these, would be serial killers, rippers, child abusers etc who even find happiness by indulging such inhuman activities. I seriously dont think that it could be possible to change such people permanently into the other categories. Solitary confinement could be a good punishment but what the use in spending money (our tax) for such people through their life. I am sure that some would disagree with me in this. The only comforting point is that this category is extremely insignificant when compared to the other two categories.
2) This category is the one which I feel is the most serious issue for the current society and hence I have pushed it after the third. First of all, we need to accept that we are all animals by nature and are being brought up as humans in a controlled society. Every child is brought up by saying that he or she would be punished for their evil deeds if not by the law atleast by the God. May be this could be one point which even atheists would support for the existence of God. People who are fully convinced reach the first category and those who are not fall into the doomed last one. I believe that all others with varied levels will fall into this middle category. But what is so serious about this category?
I consider this serious because we have the risk of having a percentage of people from this category fall closer to the third either occasionally or permanently. This downfall is extremely dangerous and this is definitely a major reason why the crime rate is progressing geometrically in the current world. This rot has to be stemmed for our future generation to have a better society to live in.
I recently stumbled upon the results of a website poll which asked its members whether they are interested in doing a particular immoral action on a famous actress. Surprisingly ninety percent of the voters voted for that inhuman act. I am sure that in a real-life situation, most of these un-identified voters will not engage in such an act but it is really unfortunate that they have such an instinct in them. Psychologically speaking, they just get some inexplicable pleasure by voting so. But there would be a few in this midst who would really dare to such devilish acts.
Why is this so? The society at large plays a vital part in this degradation.
We currently have so many things particularly media-oriented around us which leads to such degradation. As a young & inexperienced student of Psychology, I am not sure of the impact the films like 'Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu' or 'Puthupettai' or some other similar films would have on this slightly vulnerable second category. Those with better levels of such instincts might continue to be safe but what about those with higher levels?
May be it is high time that our media acts with some sense of responsibilty in their deliverables. They should understand the after-effects of their actions. Some particularly from the media, may debate that it couldn't be their error fully and parents, teachers & friends are also to be blamed. Vasool Raja MBBS
Kamal is the 'makku' payyan of a school teacher (Nagesh) and he elopes to Madras when he was young. In Madras he leads a rowdy life wherein he 'vasools' the money for lenders and get commission for that. Prabhu is his assistant cum friend and they have a huge team to run their 'business'. Meanwhile, Kamal lies to his parents that he is a doctor in Chennai and running a hospital in Nagesh's name. Whenever Nagesh and his wife come to see Kamal, he changes his house to look like a hospital and fools them.
Once Nagesh meets his erstwhile neighbour Prakashraj who is also a doctor and they agree to marry their children ie Kamal and obviously the heroine Sneha. Prakashraj later came to know that Kamal was a rowdy and cancels even the engagement without the knowledge of Sneha. Nagesh gets insulted by this and goes back to his village. Then Kamal vows to himself that he will become a doctor and then would marry Sneha. What he does to accomplish this is the rest of the story.
Kamal and Crazy Mohan are at their hilarious best particularly in the first half. But also there is a message in the film like in Anbe Sivam. There was a stress to the doctors to treat their patients like living humans and not like just another 'case'. There is also enough emphasis to cut down the formalities before admitting patients particularly during emergency situations and also in those cases of death. The film is really of very high moral value.
Kamal has also established that there is none in the industry even to get near him. His acting is really getting to greater heights in every film. Particularly his reaction when a patient dies of cancer was simply superb. Further, the way he changes his expressions from a funny situation to a serious one within the same scene was outstanding.
Sneha is absolutely ravishing. She really does a good job both in glamour and in acting. Prabhu does not have a 'huge' role like his body to play - still does a neat job. Prakashraj too does a commendable job. Almost everyone in the film have played their part well. I would definitely like to mention the role played by 'Kaka' Radhakrishnan. Hats off to the veteran.
The next important thing after Kamal in this film is its dialogues. Crazy Mohan has penned it too hilariously. Though there were areas wherein he includes his usual 'body - bra' jokes, he has done a great job which was also aided well by Kamal's timing. I dont think whether the director Saran would have got any role to do in this film but I opine that Kamal's films are better if he is not the director.
Then about music and songs. They are just ok. Both the duets are good and other songs are fine. Further, there is one sexy song which was aimed to delight a dying patient. But there was a slight tumble in handling those scenes related to that patient. That when he immediately starts dancing for that sexy song was a bit unacceptable. May be they could have handled it a bit more better.
Overall, the film was worth watching and I am sure that I will be seeing it for quite a lot of times. Also one thing that everyone has to bear in mind before going to the film is that this is not an out and out comedy film. This is a comedy film with a moral emphasis. I am not sure whether Munnabhai was this good but it couldn't have been better than this.

Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikesi
After a long long time, a historical film is being made in Tamil. Even for that the producer & the director should be appreciated - particularly for their courage & confidence. This is an out & out Vadivel film. Except the first 2-3 scenes, Vadivel appears in each and every shot of the film. Such scenarios happen only in case of big stars like Rajni or Kamal. He just gave his best to take this film to a huge success.
The story is not a great one - a wee bit similar to Utthama Putthiran (but only a wee bit). This fictitious story is based in the later part of the 18th century where a queen of a small kingdom gives birth to twins after 22 unborn babies. Her wily brother, with a wish to rule that kingdom wanted only child to be born and so leaves one of the babies into a river. The other child was named 23rd Pulikesi and he was brought up into a coward king by his uncle. Though he was called the king, it was his uncle who ruled the kingdom supporting the Britishers. Meanwhile, the boy
Ugraputthiran who was left in the river grew up as a brave & intelligent fellow and went on to lead a team of rebels.
At one instance, when the uncle was on a friendly trip to Chennai to meet some Britishers, Ugraputthiran got a chance to replace himself as his brother. He with the help of the Army-chief revived the entire kingdom and gave the people an excellent rule. He revoked all the idiotic practices inaugurated by his brother and created awareness amongst the people. He also opposed the Britishers and banned them & their products from his kingdom. When his uncle came back and opposed him, both the brothers got united and ousted him. Finally, Pulikesi took charge of the kingdom and promised good independent rule to the nation.
As said earlier, Vadivel is everything for this film. It was a remarkable performance from him. Right from his dialogue delivery to his body-language, everything was exemplary. He really did well to distinguish between both his roles. Looks like, he has taken a cue from MGR's acting for his role of Ugraputthiran. In most of those romantic scenes, his dialogue delivery imitates MGR a lot. But Pulikesi was one of his masterpieces. He was at his hilarious best through-out the film and he was well-aided by Ilavarasu. Both of them made a wonderful pair making all laugh every now and then.
It was a cakewalk performance for Nasser and he did his part well. There are quite a lot of known faces in the film but Vadivel sidelines them all. Though there were two heroines one each for each son, none of them had any chance to perform or excel. Music by Sabesh-Murali was nothing great. They were just a mixture of old songs - well disguised. May be, some of them might even make you murmur but you would better recite the dialogues than the songs.
I still cannot consider this as a comedy film at all. Though it is humourous it contains a lot of messages - both for the rulers and for the ruled. It is quite vivid that this film is being taken with a purpose. The director has tried to give a message with the comedy. Particularly, I would like to mention a scene wherein Pulikesi creates a playground where people can come and clash for their caste. Humourously, the director has just ridiculed the caste-clashes and other related clashes. Those who indulge in such things should feel ashamed after seeing that scene. If at all, if they have anything called sense, they should stop indulging in such activities on seeing this scene.
Similarly, there are quite a lot of scenes through-out the film. They have also mocked cola-culture, cricket-craze, some idiotic government decisions etc. Only that the director has missed out in logic in certain areas - but that is forgivable. Also in one of the scenes, Pulikesi would mention the name of Napoleon as a hero but Napoleon wouldn't have been famous at that time. However Vadivel mocked that too by mentioning "Brave heart - Mel Gibson" in one of the later scenes.
As such it is really very very encouraging to see new directors like Simbudevan coming up with such films with messages. If more and more directors come up with such films, the Tamil film industry can really reach greater heights in future. Also it might slightly assist in creating some kind of awareness amongst people.

Object oriented programming with Ayutha Ezuthu
Sometimes, I compare screen-play formats with computer programming. So far we all would have seen top-down programming in our usual tamil films with some function calls for a flashback here and there. Sometimes you can see a function call within another function call like Badsha wherein there would be a flashback within another flashback. Mani Ratnam brought in a change in these kind of film programming in
Alaipayuthe using a lot of 'goto's to travel here and there between the main program and functions. Welcome to object oriented

But the minister actually uses Inba for his underground activities particularly to suppress his new enemies in the form of students. Inba
almost as heartless guy hits out at the students like anything. Later at the order of the minister shoots Michael at Napier bridge.

Sivakasi. Still she goes on dating with Arjun and even goes on to kiss him. For them, this seems to be just a time-pass till she leaves
to Sivakasi and he to US.

One fine day, Arjun proposes to Mira at the Napier Bridge and thats when Inba shoots Michael.

Arjun with the help of Mira saves Michael and admits him in a hospital. The entire gang of Michael thank Arjun (while Mira left to Sivakasi for marriage). But Inba beats up Arjun in the hospital itself. Seeing the huge student following of Michael and his great intentions, Arjun changes his mind and decides to stand up with Michael and serve the nation. At one instance, he will even decide to stand in the by-elections along with Michael and his 2 friends.

Inba's wife aborts her child voluntarily to punish Inba. Inba is terribly moved on that and he promises to live a good life with her. He agrees to leave the city with her and live a peaceful life.

Meanwhile, the minister orders Guna to kill his brother Inba so that they should escape from getting caught. All of a sudden, Inba was forced to kill Guna and he goes on to become the right hand for the minister. Saras leaves the city without Inba.

At the orders of the minister, Inba abducts all the 3 candidates other than Michael and tortures them. But Inba's friend releases them and due to that gets killed by the heartless Inba. When Inba goes in search of Arjun to captivate him again, Michael interrupts and stops Inba and defeats him.
Finally,Inba lands in jail. Michael, Arjun and the other 2 friends get elected and become MLAs.
The program ends says this is the beginning.

who is also a baddie working under an Minister. Through the minister, Inba gets a gas agency and gets on with that business well.

But the minister actually uses Inba for his underground activities particularly to suppress his new enemies in the form of students. Inba
almost as heartless guy hits out at the students like anything. Later at the order of the minister shoots Michael at Napier bridge.
